Maxalt

Maxalt Information

Maxalt decreases the widening of the blood vessels and thus returning them to their normal size. It does this during a migraine attack. Maxalt also obstructs the release of certain chemicals from nerve endings that cause more pain and other signs of migraine.

Maxalt Indications

Maxalt is primarily used in relieving the headache pain and other symptoms of migraine attacks. Maxalt is not advisable for other types of headaches.

Maxalt may also be used for purposes such as those not indicated here in this guide.

Maxalt Warnings

Maxalt may not be well-suited if you have the following conditions:

  • high blood pressure
  • heart diseases, which includes angina or a previous heart attack

Maxalt is also not suited if you have taken monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) inhibitors such as any of the following drugs within the last two weeks:

  • moclobemide
  • phenelzine
  • tranylcypromine
  • pargyline

Maxalt should not be used if the patient has any type of allergy to its components such as:

  • lactose
  • microcrystalline cellulose
  • pregelatinised maize starch
  • iron oxide
  • magnesium stearate
  • rizatriptan benzoate

Maxalt should also not be used if any of the following has occurred:

  • the seal around the cap has been broken
  • the bottle or packaging has shown signs of tampering
  • the expiry date on the bottle has passed

It is not known if Maxalt can cause any defects or harm to an unborn infant. However, do not take Maxalt without your doctor?s permission when you are pregnant.

It is not known whether Maxalt passes into breast milk and to a nursing infant. Do not take Maxalt if you are nursing a child without your doctor?s consent.

Maxalt Intake Guidelines

Maxalt should be used exactly as directed by your doctor. If there are matters that you do not understand, refer to your pharmacist, nurse or physician and ask him or her to explain those matters to you.

Maxalt should be taken in with 8 ounces or one full glass of water and can be taken in with or without food.

Make sure to follow all of your doctor?s advice and instructions when taking Maxalt.

Maxalt Dosage

Dosage of Maxalt should be obtained from your doctor. Dosage may vary from person to person with regards to a variety of factors such as age, severity of condition and others. Do not take in more or less of Maxalt so as not to alter its effects and to prevent overdose.

Maxalt Overdose

Symptoms of overdose of Maxalt include the following:

  • dizziness
  • fainting
  • sleepiness
  • slow heartbeat

If you experience any of these symptoms, you may be experiencing overdose. Seek immediate medical attention or call poison control. Inform your doctor afterwards.

Maxalt Missed Dose

Since Maxalt is used only to relieve pain when a migraine attack is ongoing, missing doses of Maxalt is not an issue.

Maxalt Side Effects

Maxalt may have any of the following side effects or allergic reactions:

  • sleepiness or tiredness
  • dizziness
  • inability to sleep
  • decreased mental sharpness
  • nervousness
  • feeling sick or nausea
  • stomach upset or pain
  • diarrhea
  • blurred vision
  • dry mouth
  • thirst
  • throat discomfort
  • bad taste
  • skin rash or itching
  • redness or flushing of the face
  • hot flushes or sweating
  • severe sloughing of the skin

If you experience any of these side effects, continue using the product but inform your doctor immediately.

Other side effects may also occur when you take Maxalt. Inform your doctor if you experience anything unusual while or after taking Maxalt.

Maxalt Drug Reactions

Maxalt may react with the following drugs:

  • monoamine oxidase inhibitors used to treat depression, which includes moclobemide, tranylcypromine, phenelzine, (Australia only: pargyline)
  • sumatriptan
  • propranolol
  • ergotamine
  • methysergide

Other drugs my also interact with Maxalt. Inform your doctor if you are taking any medications other than Maxalt such as vitamins, minerals, and even herbal products.
